Thanks to my awesome friends, I’m the proud owner of a 3G Kindle (grey). I’m extremely happy with it – I’ve been using the kindle app on my Android for some time now to read. Using the kindle itself is soo much nicer because there’s no glare and it’s about the size of a book. I got the lit cover, so my kindle is protected and is able to power its own reading light. :)
What I love especially are the screensavers. It seems to be an automatic thing – because the kindle doesn’t actually use power once it displays a page (oh the magic of e-ink!), it’s extremely battery efficient and so after a certain time of no activity detected, the kindle will automatically put itself to “sleep” by displaying an illustration. Usually it’s a picture of an author, but there’s old timey illustrations as well. It’s quite fun.
I’m currently reading “Wives and Daughters” by Elizabeth Gaskell and “Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett. In the old fashioned paper book world, I’m rereading “I, Claudius.” I would be reading it on kindle, but amazon.com apparently doesn’t think Americans are cultured enough to warrant electronic versions, though they have no such reservations for the amazon.co.uk.
The majority of the books I have are from the public domain – I am a poor grad student after all, so why would I pay for books when there are so many good old classics out there? Among my ambitions are to pick up my French reading skills again. I’m going to reread Candide. I did it in high school, so let’s see how much I can remember.

The Asus EEE PC t91 is shipping today, according to Engadget and I WANT ONE because it’s chock full of gadgetry goodness. This is the touchscreen model that I’ve been lusting over since it was announced in January.
The T101H should be coming out too… it’s like the t91 but one inch larger. I would actually prefer that one, but let’s face it… i’m probably not going to get a netbook anytime soon while I still have my current laptop.

Why does Apple put 2 different graphics cards in the macbook pro rather than putting 2 of the same, so that you can take advantage of SLI?
It’s retarded. A 9400gt and 9600gt. You can only use one at the same time. They could have made a killing off gamers who want a pretty laptop for games… after all, those gamers can always dualboot to windows for games. Or actually, why don’t they enable SLI mode at all? It’s still possible. It just means both run like 9400gt cards, if what I learned is correct.
Bah. What potential. Wasted.

So in an attempt to curb my gadget lust, I’m limiting myself to one “luxury” item per month. Last month I bought myself the Samsung T240hd LCD monitor/TV. I genuinely needed a better monitor and this can double as a tv when I no longer live with a roommate who owns a big one. (Chad’s TV matches mine. They’re both from the Touch of Color series. His, however, is 46 inches. :-D) Thanks to microsoft cashback, I’ll be getting back $130, so I don’t feel too guilty about it.
This month, I’m on the market for a nice rice cooker. Mine refuses to cook rice, after years and years of service. I’m thinking of getting one of the fancy Zojirushi ones that’s so smart it could probably save the world while cooking the perfect pot of rice. The consensus on the web seems to be that the best rice cookers are made in Japan… reviews are positive in that these machines seem to last years and years.
Next month, I’m thinking internal hard drive (at least 750gb) + external case. My WD MyBook has failed me with the click of death. I should have known better than to buy western digital, but alas, its cute design and irresistible blue LEDs overpowered my good sense. Luckily, black friday sales are going to occur during this month, so I’ll see if I can get good deals then…

I gave in to temptation and bought at 16gb nano in red today. It’s beautiful. I will cherish it, but I will not neglect my shuffle either. I figure I need an mp3 player with a screen so I can um… have one.
