Les Mis!

Thanks to Anita, I’m listening to the Austrian cast for Les Mis. It sounds great, of course, but the Javert is no Philip Quast, whom I consider the quintessential Javert. Marius and Cosette are more tolerable, but Eponine… ever since I heard Lea Salonga as Eponine, none of the others have been quite as good in my mind.

crepes AND gelato!

The newest Ubuntu distro is out!! Kubuntu looks better than ever with compiz fusion… Weee!!!

Went to Sacramento to look for halloween costumes… and ended up going to the mall nearby. Mike saw a placed called “Crepes ‘n Gelato” on the mall directory and commented that it was two of my favorite things (haha he knows what a glutton I am) and so we went by and OH MY GOD gelato crepes!!! I got a green tea one that had green tea gelato, red bean paste, matcha powder, and whipped cream. It was GINORMOUS. Next time I’d like to try the rose gelato, which a labmate has repeated raved about…

Best XKCD comic EVER

SQL Injection!! This has got to be my favorite XKCD post thus far.

So, in case you don’t understand… Sanitizing your database inputs means making sure that what the user is trying to submit as a database query, in this case, the kid’s name, doesn’t contain characters that could potentially be mixed up with stuff that signifies commands. Not doing so can allow the malicious user to execute arbitrary commands. In the comic, by adding that ‘); to her kid’s name, the mom was able to exploit the lack of sanitation by using that apostrophe to end the enter name query and tack on the erase database table command DROP TABLE.

Hehehe.

horatio caine is weird

So CSI’s been running for quite a few years now… As far as tv series go, CSI’s been pretty good w/the stories and side stories and characters… but oh man, on CSI Miami Horatio Caine’s really bugging me w/his little one liners and his holier-than-thou way of delivering lines and then putting on his sunglasses and repeating things twice and calling everyone his son ARRRGH!!! We get it, ok? We get that he’s supposed to be this magical creepy guy that kids miraculously talk to and noble and uber-awesome and cares about everyone and always gets the bad guys! And maybe we get that he’s supposed to be Jesus. Whatever. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s a smug, patronizing caricature of a leader rather than the scientist/head CSI that he’s supposed to be. (I do like some of the supporting cast… Delko, Calleigh, and Alexx the ME… yay! they’re good.. very good.) Here. watch this to see how stupid his one liners are and why he needs to be eaten by an alligator or maybe have one of his victims turn out to be a crazy serial killer stalk him.

CSI Vegas is still awesome. They have one liners but they don’t take themselves so seriously so the lines are FUNNY, not stupid.

And Desperate Housewives… I hate hate hate Teri Hatcher’s character, Susan, who’s possibly the most self-absorbed bitch in the show. How is she likeable? How?? I want to see her character end up in a ditch somewhere. She should have been mauled by a bear last season while she was off in the woods.

food, get in my belly!

This has been a pretty good week for good food. A bunch of us went to Mikuni’s on Wednesday, where I had the best seared tuna of my life, along with some really good rolls. I think that night was the first time my two roommates and I were home at the same time. We had some good homecooked stuff the next night… (w/me getting dimsum for lunch earlier… hehe) Chad made the most awesome chicken curry soup and Mike was smart enough to bring some hot wings over. I guess Friday was a break and Saturday… oh… Saturday was an interesting day.

Chad had emailed us about this San Francisco thing called “Love Fest” which promised parades, music, and all sorts of San Franciscan uniqueness. By uniqueness I mean the local people who dress up in an odd assortment of costumes. And some with minimal costumes. We met up with Jim and his family for some sushi that night, which could not compare to Mikuni’s. Ah, I also met up with a friend from high school who’s just founded his own web 2.0 startup. And of course today, I went w/mike, the roommates + their gfs to Mikuni’s again for another dose of the awesome tuna. So so yummy…

Mmmm… it’s been a delicious week.
