summer days

It’s getting harder and harder to be open and bare my soul via this blog. As I get older and more entrenched in security I get more paranoid and less eager to share all but the superficial details of life with a world of strangers connected to the web. (Plus, I know you read this, Mom and Dad.)

That said… let’s go on to the banal details now. Summer’s here, and it’s unbearably hot in Davis. Luckily, this new apartment is rather cool so I’m not roasting as long as I’m here. I’m finally unpacked and all settled in, except I still have to connect my desktop computer to the internet.

This summer, I’m determined to learn to make desserts. And cook a lot more, which probably requires that I shift my schedule forward a few hours so i don’t drive my roommates crazy. It’s annoying to go to lab and the come home and go back again though, because Davis is disgustingly hot until maybe 8 or 9pm, at which point it turns pretty chilly.

tricky…

A comment at Bruce Schneier’s blog regarding phishing and Harry Potter fans has a fairly plausible point, and I can easily see avid Harry Potter fans (the majority of which I’m assuming are fairly young) clicking on links that promise spoilers, downloads, notification of new content, etc, but instead deliver malware. The “beauty” of social engineering attacks online is that you just have to have an inkling about what people want, and somewhere, someone in the world will want it… and those who aren’t so keen or educated about security, like say… the young fans of Harry Potter, are bound to try and click.

anti-electronic voting

Hehehe Heroes! Ah, even though it’s perhaps overly dramatized, one of my favorite scenes was…

( spoilers ahead!!! avert your eyes! )

In other news… I’ve moved out of my duplex apartment and into the next one, thanks to Mike, who lifted all the heavy stuff and drove the damn pickup truck back and forth. ^_^ New apartment is pretty awesome, since I have my own bathroom!!! And… the laundry facilities are card, NOT coin operated, so no more scrounging about for stupid quarters. Woo!

alone again

Mimi & Sera are gone. :( Sera arrived Saturday morning. We went for sushi and returned home, where Mimi and Sera watched tv shows and napped while I finished up the very last bits of my work for this quarter. We met up with a bunch of people for dinner at OZ Korean BBQ. Very very VERY yummy. And then Hiroshi, his wife, and a rather drunk friend joined us for karaoke at Rurulala.

Mike, Dan, Hiroshi & pals were awesome, as expected. ^^;; It was sooo fun to see the Japanese guys perform and dance to Yatta. Wish my stupid camera was not dead and incapable of filming things in dim lighting.

Mimi, Sera, and I tried valiantly to stay up all night to maximize our time together. However, we’re all getting older and more and more incapable of pulling all nighters, even with caffeine. My roommate left for New York around 5am. I sent Mimi off to the airport in the morning. (I swear she has the worst luck with airports. Her incoming flight delayed her ~half a day and her flight back to Boston did pretty much the same.) Sera made us spicy dubboki (mmmm) for lunch before I had to send her off too… sad…

Meems!

Mimi (or, as we say… Zee Meems!) is here! And tomorrow, we’ll soon be joined by Sera. Unfortunately, Davis has little to offer in the way of entertainment these days besides food. I showed Mimi around downtown… We got gelato, went to Borders for an hour or two (the sequel to Empress Orchid is out!) and then met up with the usual group for dinner at Sophia’s. I introduced Mimi to the wonder that is Citrus Apple Snapper. Oh deliciousness of deliciousness… who knew that apples and onions and fish could mix so well?

The end of the year barbecue went extremely well. We planned to feed ~30 people, and a whole lot more showed up. I thought we’d bought too much food… but it was just enough to feed most of the people who showed up on time. Personally, I thought the highlight of the bbq was the ahi tuna. Ooooof. So amazingly good…

want an easy high?

Kemper stairwells smell more foul than usual today… they varnished something or other. I can’t tell the difference because it looks as dirty and old as ever. Ugh. Smells like someone went crazy with permanent markers. Bah. Kemper stairwell is the land of bad smells.
