kites & cartoons

Today was a gorgeous day… I went to see the kite festival in Berkeley w/Jeff Wu, Steve, and my sister. We kinda missed all the good stuff, like kite battles, whatever that is… hahaha but we got to see the reaaaaally cute cat with a penguin with a fish and the swarm of octopus and purple teddy bears!!! Berkeley’s neat, but why are there bead shops every two feet??

Then we headed to San Francisco, where we went to the Castro theater to see a Ren and Stimpy event. It started out marvelously. The theater is absolutely beautiful and there was a guy playing tunes on an organ for a while before the actual thing started. Then the show began.

Hearing John Kricfalusi speak was kinda neat, because he was a funny guy. The cartoons, however, were horrifyingly bad. You know how Vogons are notoriously bad for poetry and you think there’s no way on earth that something could make you want to gnaw your own limbs off to survive?? Well, this thing was the equivalent of Vogon poetry. Ok, so there were some funny things (Life Sucks), but the majority of it was ruined by the fat asian man sitting in front of me. He had the world’s most annoying laugh. Now, I don’t remember Comic Book Guy’s laugh (Simpsons) but I instinctively knew that this guy personified Comic Book Guy’s worst physical and personality qualities, ANNOYING being the chief one. Man, he laughed at everything. And I mean… everything. Imagine two and a half hours of the world’s most annoying laugh. I wanted to put my feet up on his chair and “accidentally” have them slip up. Or maybe not be so subtle and just slap him upside the head.

nostalgic indulgence

Went shopping yesterday. :) Finding really nice bargains always makes me happy. As does buying really pretty things.

My Time Life’s Lost Civilizations (this was a series of documentaries about ancient civilizations that aired in… 1996? well, a long time ago) came. Oh I love that show. We recorded it at the time, and I watched each episode over and over again. Of course, it was blurry and there are commercials. Annoying, cheesy commercials. These dvds make me feel like I’m rediscovering a better quality piece of my childhood.

I also got Orson Scott Card’s Enchantment. ^_^ I’ve never lost my love of fairy tales, which I guess explains my obsession with mythology, and at some point in middle school I discovered a few books that retold fairy tales. There was Patricia Wrede’s Snow White and Rose Red, Jane Yolen’s Briar Rose, Robin McKinley’s Beauty, various retellings of Tam Lin, and of course, Enchantment, my favorite by far. Why? :-) because it combined magic with time travelling, epic battles (ok, one epic battle) and a talking bear.

Getting new books always makes me giddy. :-D It’s just not the same as borrowing it from the library…

laugh, damn it!

at engineering lunch today (the engineering team always goes out to lunch every other week), the topic of conversation turned to airline seats. Someone mentioned that now they have some service where you can put in details about yourself and they’ll try to seat you next to people who match you or something like that. One of the guys knew his dream person’s quality immediately…

“How about a skinny deaf mute with no arms and a huge bladder?”

a spicy post!

Soooooo today was rather fun. :) It started with habanero burgers at the Prince of Wales pub in San Mateo. It was deeeeliciously spicy. I didn’t have much trouble finishing it, unlike my friend, whose name I shall keep secret to protect his identity… let’s call him, oooh… Weff Ju. mmmm…. habanero burger… the next time i have one, i’ll time myself.

We headed towards the movie theater next, because I decided I wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean. Lots of impressive actors showing up… to make up for Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom’s lack of talent, I suppose.

( spoilers ahead )

After that, we went to san jose to watch Comedy Sportz, which is essentially “Who’s Line is it Anyway.” Funny stuff… except for the little girl behind us who was really really REALLY annoying.

my apartment managers are evil

I’ve emailed them repeatedly, telling them that I’m completely moved out and that I intend to sublease. Yet… when potential visitors go and want to look at the apartment, they say, “oh, we don’t know anything about it. we can’t show you the place.”

The managers at University Square Apartments are evil. EVIL! and rude. Gah!!! Good riddance to that place!
