shopping!

The plan is to be back in Davis by New Year’s Eve… so I can meet my soon to be good friend - Fondue. And the people around, of course. :-P

Went shopping today… Oh Express, how I’ve missed you! and had tons of SUSHI… Humina humina! This little piggy’s quite satisfied, so I’ll leave you guys with a question: What is it about aging that suddenly makes grotesque patterns such as leopard print in blinding colors like hot pink bearable for women? Someone’s gotta be buying those things if they keep coming out with them. Who? Why??

Memoirs of a Geisha

Watched Memoirs of a Geisha tonight with my mom & little sister. It’s good entertainment. Probably not my FAVORITE all time movie, but def. something I’d see again. (Maybe on MUTE)

( Spoilers! Opinions! )

So it was good. ^_^ They changed the movie from the book… as expected, but nothing REALLY bad.

karaoke!!

Friday night’s end of the quarter karaoke potluck went well… except for one little glitch when I sent Jeff off to rent the karaoke machine and neglected to tell him that I’d reserved one and the rental ppl refused to rent it out to him. Francis’ reaction to Jeff not being present at 7pm after leaving at 4pm: “What have you done to my roommate? You sent him off… to his DOOM!!” Mwahahahhahaha…

I took tons and tons of pics and video clips. Some of which I shall post, and some of which I shall save. Luckily, Mike had brought his karaoke revolution games and I’d brought my PS2, so we were able to do karaoke still. (And there was DDR too! but i missed it… booo)

( The ensuing madness!! )

Tomorrow is final exams grading. And hopefully I shall be done by evening, so I can celebrate with Conny & Daniel.

jackpot!

I will completely ignore the fact that this brings to light my gluttony… but can I just say how ecstatic I was to find GREEN TEA GELATO in “We have no good asian food stores even though half the people here are asian” Davis?? Two of my favorite things. In one edible package!!! and I also found Baileys Irish Cream flavored Haagen Dazs ice cream. Which I am SOO going to devour over the weekend.

And this is how I begin to turn into a big ball of lard.

Narnia & potlucks!

Saw Narnia Friday night.
( What I thought of it... )

The potluck Saturday evening at Conny & Daniel’s house was lovely. After Ananya had been talking about it forever, we FINALLY did it! (This is one of the things I like best about grad school and how I’ve changed… people - myself included, actually DO THINGS that that they talk about doing. Carpe diem!) Ananya made tabouli; Daniel and Conny made deviled eggs; Till made a pumpkin soup; Jeff brought angel food cake, peaches, and almonds for the dessert combo; I made celery & pork and tomato & eggs. It was lots of fun… ^_^ I feel like I’m turning all domestic now, what with the desire to be at potlucks all the time… and as I admited to Grace, one of the things on my wishlist is a crepe pan.

could it work here?

This definitely wins the cute story of the year award (for e-voting). You didn’t think “cute” and “e-voting” could be used in the same sentence huh?

Mr Rhodes says he gave his dog the full name of Toby Russel Rhodes, occupation: rodent exterminator, and signed a squiggle, accompanied by a paw print, for a signature. He gave Toby the birth date of July 4, 1977 - his age in “human years” (his real age is four years). He expected Toby’s application to be rejected.

To his surprise, Mr Rhodes received a letter in the mail, addressed to Toby, saying he had been registered in the Otago electorate and was able to vote.

That about summarizes it all.

a song, and a few things of note

I hadn’t listened to the 战神 (Mars) soundtrack very closely because most soundtracks for dramas have maybe two good songs (the opening and ending theme, and then a few other ok ones)… wish I had, because “说爱我” (say you love me) is surprisingly good.

It’s all about the misunderstandings of intentions, ie the guy not understanding and therefore driven away by what the girl means by wanting to be free/independent and how that failed a relationship blah blah… you know, the standard angsty drama material. (I should post lyrics sometime. I haven’t done that in a while.) Actually, that entire soundtrack is pretty good… especially the instrumental versions of the songs.

( In the news: panda dogs, singing, x-men, and E-voting )

movies to see…

Ok, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Memoirs of a Geisha are coming out next week, one after the other. I WANT to SEEEE them both!!! ^_^ The trailers look AMAZINGLY beautiful for both movies. Even if the dialogue & acting completely SUCK I can totally tune out the audio and just watch the pretty pictures. Hahahhaha…

The childish part of me is extremely excited about Narnia, especially since Liam Neeson is Aslan!!! (And Aslan is a thinly veiled Jesus, which means… liam neeson is Irish Jesus!! *waits for lightning to strike me down for irreverence & blasphemy*) I wonder if they’ll do the entire series. I’ve only read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I vaguely remember reading or trying to read some of the others, but I couldn’t get into them. I admit, I don’t appreciate the moral lessons CS Lewis is trying to convey… and I just read it as a fairy tale novel.

Memoirs of a Geisha’s like a powerhouse of Chinese stars + Ken Watanabe. I don’t like Zhang Ziyi much, but I think it’s kinda cool that she and Gong Li are playing rivals, since everyone says that Zhang Ziyi’s like a younger, less talented version of Gong Li. Too bad Zhang Ziyi’s character wins. I still wish Maggie was playing the part of Mameha instead of Michelle Yeoh… and I can totally see Tony Leung or Francis Ng as the Chairman & Jacky Cheung or Anthony Wong as Nobu if they were going to continue on with their Chinese actors as Japanese characters. (Is it bad that everytime I hear the name “Nobu,” I think of Battle Royale?) I don’t understand why they’re doing the entire movie, set in Japan, about a very specific part of Japanese culture, in Chinese-accented English. Is it so hard to hire talented Japanese actors & put in subtitles?
